Here we go again…today I received email from an animal welfare colleague asking that I sign a petition against a proposed ban on all dogs considered to be from the bully breed category; Ohio HB 568. You can go there now if you like, even before you read any more. Ohio HB 568
How does one legislate compassion, love, morality, or decency? Good question, because this breed is continually persecuted because they are strong, tenacious, and loyal to their owners…they used to be called the babysitter dog. Some have been trained by unscrupulous holders who consider watching animals fight until one is critically injured or dies, a sport. It is barbaric!
Ohio HB 568 proposes that:
- No person shall own, keep, or harbor a dog that belongs to a breed that is commonly known as a Pit Bull dog.
- No later than 90 after the effective date of this bill, a person who owns, keeps, or harbors a Pit Bull dog will be forced to surrender the dog to a dog warden.
- Within 10 days of surrender, the dog will be euthanized.
- If an officer has probable cause to believe that a dog is a Pit Bull, the officer may apply for a search warrant. After obtaining a search warrant, an officer shall seize the dog and transfer the dog to a dog warden, who shall euthanize the dog within 10 days.
You want to kill ME?
This reminds me of the gathering up of all Japanese Americans right after Pearl Harbor and interring them in camps around the country. Talk about profiling!! At least most of the Japanese were eventually released. Arrested Pit Bulls will not enjoy the same luxury. And no one forgets the concentration camps run by Hitler. Is this as far as we’ve come?

Do people in general, and specifically the people who govern, really believe that instituting this type of legislation will really deter this type of behavior? Viscous and violent people remain so, no matter how many laws are passed.
Everyone appears to be aghast at the genocide taking place in Darfur; I certainly am, but how is this any different? Yes, there are many of you out there who don’t consider animals to be equal with man, but both humans and animals are living beings and we both suffer in the same ways. We also respond to love and compassion, food and shelter. We usually will do anything our “parents” ask of us too.
Banning an entire breed of dog is genocide. Are we not more civilized than this in America? And if we’re not then what is the future of the human race?
Today I am coining a new anachronism…Shiny Object Syndrome…or SOS.
First, there are the celebrity fundraisers that McCain held and then accused Obama of being an elitist and a celebrity when he raised money in Hollywood. An SOS is when you point the finger at someone else with the hope that it will take the spotlight off of what is REALLY going on ~ such as quietly hosting your own celebrity studded event and then finding fault with your opponent for doing the same ~ it’s an SOS.
There is the tanning bed discussion…shall we call it “Tangate?” What are we NOT paying attention to about this woman while we’re all ’tisk-tisking’ her for having a tanning bed? Personally, I don’t get what all the fuss is about. I lived in Anchorage for nearly three years and I went to tanning centers twice a week, because if people didn’t, you’d be so depressed from the lack of sunlight that you’d drink yourself to death. But of course, there were those who did both. So “Tangate” is an SOS, but I say, PLEASE, let’s discuss something of importance about Sarah Palin, like who the heck is this woman? After all, she is one flatline away from being the leader of the free world.
I wrote to a great friend of mine who has been a card-carrying member of the Republican party for decades. In fact, he ran GOP campaigns and worked in the White House. Here is what he had to say about Sarah:
“I know Sarah Palin; she is a religious fanatic, ambitious, short tempered, and has a great sense of timing, politically. She also is a pathological liar! The selection of Sarah Palin to be our VP was the final straw; I am switching parties and voting for Obama. She brings nothing to the government and is utterly unqualified to be either VP or President. “ Unqualified…a powerful word.
Here is another SOS: The financial industry is crumbling before our eyes. But does anyone remember the Keating Five? That pesky Savings & Loan crisis of the late 80′s and early 90′s when 747 savings and loan associations (S&Ls) in the United States, failed? The ultimate cost of the crisis is estimated to have totaled around $160.1 BILLION, about $124.6 billion of which was directly paid for by the U.S. taxpayer. Sound familiar? Did you know that John McCain was one of the Keating Five? Yep. So do we want this guy stepping in to “save” the economy with his history? I think not. For the record, George Bush’s brother was involved too.
People, we’re 3 TRILLION dollars in debt! How can we spend yet more money when we can’t pay the bills now? Actually, I’d love to know what happened to the 150 Billion dollar surplus that Clinton left in the coffers when he moved out of the White House. Oh, that’s right, we invaded Iraq. Silly me.
The current financial crisis as a huge SOS, but this one will put hair on your chest!
I heard about a report today on Progressive Talk Radio saying that the McCain campaign is sending out absentee ballot applications to registered Democrats, or people who have donated to Obama’s campaign. These ballots are deliberately misleading and have postage paid return addresses that are for an election clerk that is outside the city or town where you live.
How does this affect you? Well, if you live in a “purple state” where they’re said to be distributing these things, your vote will NOT be counted…OR…if you return it, they will cite you for election fraud, saying that you already voted absentee. It’s called “voter caging.” It’s deja vu all over again…only it’s John McCain trying to steal the election this time. In this case SOS could stand for Save Our Ship…Please!
My friends inbox is filled with fear-based emails ~ the Democratic Congress is guilty for the economy ~ we all have to stop thinking about global warming and political correctness, because, according to a Mossad agent, the terrorists will start blowing up airports instead of planes. According to Snopes there is no such thing. It’s yet another SOS!
